APRU Undergraduate Leaders’ Program 2024:
Sustainable Development in a Fast-Changing Metropolis

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is proud to host the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Undergraduate Leaders’ Program (ULP) in July 2024. Themed “Sustainable Development in a Fast-Changing Metropolis,” this program is a beacon of inspiration and learning for the leaders of tomorrow. Set against the dynamic and evolving backdrop of Shanghai, a city that epitomizes the blend of tradition with cutting-edge modernity, the program offers a unique window into the challenges and opportunities of urban sustainability. The focus of the program is on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 11): Sustainable Cities and Communities, as well as cross-cutting goals on food security (SDG 2), green mobility (SDG 7), and sustainable ecosystems (SDGs 14, 15). As the world grapples with the complexities of urban development that is inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, this program stands as a pivotal platform for fostering a deep and nuanced understanding of these critical issues.

The APRU ULP 2024 transcends traditional academic boundaries, offering a rich tapestry of learning experiences that range from expert-led seminars to hands-on fieldwork in Shanghai’s urban landscape. It is designed not just to educate but to empower a new generation of changemakers. Participants from diverse backgrounds across the Pacific Rim will engage in a collaborative journey, exchanging ideas, and forging solutions for the sustainable development of this metropolis and other cities. The program aligns itself as an incubator for innovation and thought leadership, where students are not only exposed to the real-world challenges of urban renewal, heritage conservation, and environmental conservation, but are also encouraged to envision and craft transformative solutions. Through this immersive experience, APRU ULP 2024 aims to equip its participants with the skills, knowledge, and perspectives necessary to drive positive change in their communities and contribute meaningfully to the global discourse on urban sustainability.
