As the corporate R&D center of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC), Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) pursues emerging and breakthrough technologies across a broad range of SEC’s business areas to seed and discover new business opportunities. The goal is to devote talents and technologies to creating superior products and services that contribute to a better world.
Every year, SAIT’s Global Research Outreach Program (GRO Program) calls for proposals in the most frontier research areas from world’s leading universities. It is designed to create opportunities – in colleges and universities around the world – for breakthrough research. Via the GRO program, SAIT invites the best and the most novel ideas on a range of striking research subjects with the goal of establishing collaborative research relationship between universities and SAIT/SEC.
For 2011 SAIT GRO, hundreds of proposals in 32 subjects from 15 research categories were received and 33 proposals were selected. Prof. Kai Xu’s proposal “Design and Implementation of a Robotic Slave for Single Port Access (SPA) Surgeries” was one of the winners. Other winning projects are from MIT, Stanford University, Columbia University, UC Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology, Imperial College, Carnegie Mellon University, etc.
Prof. Kai Xu introduced his research project, “Single Port Access (SPA) surgery has great potentials due to being less invasive than traditional laparoscopy. However, manual surgical tools for SPA procedures are very difficult to manipulate because of the single skin incision. The project proposed by Prof. Kai Xu will design and construct a robotic slave, which will be controlled by surgeons, to overcome the operational difficulty of SPA surgeries. Results from this research project could contribute to a faster adoption of SPA surgeries.”
