JI students win big at 2015 MCM/ICM

The recently released results of the 2015 Mathematical Contest in Modeling/ Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) show that among the 24 teams from the University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute’s (UM-SJTU JI) Innovation Club, 5 teams are Meritorious Winners (first prize) and 10 teams get Honorable Mention (second prize), a remarkable progress from last year.

The Mathematical Contest in Modeling for undergraduate students is held annually in the USA. Established by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Application (COMAP) in 1985 and sponsored by SIAM, the NSA, and INFORMS. It is a unique international math contest with focus on research, originality, teamwork, communication and justification of results. It runs concurrently with the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM).

The 2015 MCM/ICM was held online from February 6 to 10, participated by more than 10,000 teams from all over the world. At the start, each team selected one from two to three problems, which require use of continuous mathematics, discrete mathematics, or broad knowledge of science, business and public policy. Within 96 hours, each team conducted research using limited reference resources and submitted their solutions in the form of a research paper.

It was an unforgettable experience for the participants. “Besides opening my eyes, it is a test of my math skills,” remarked a JI student. “It is exhilarating to race with time to come out with the solution. JI’s all-English teaching model has prepared us to do well on international competitions such as this.”
