A symposium organized by the University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) was held at JI on Oct 15. The Korean delegates included ProfessorsKyung-Tae Kang, Heuiseok Kang, Kwan Hyun Cho from KITECH and Professor Moon Gu Lee from Ajou University. JI attendees included Professors Xinwan Li, Tian Yang and Yaping Dan. A couple of representatives from SJTU’s School of Mechanical Engineering and School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering were also present. The symposium was to follow up on a memorandum of understanding signed by Shanghai Jiaotong University and KITECH in early 2015. The two sides exchanged research results and laid out plans for future research collaboration in the field of electronic engineering.

Professor Li welcomed the guests warmly and introduced the basic framework of the JI-KITECH MOU. Attendees reviewed the recent development of advanced 3-D printing technology in the micro and nano area. Subsequently, they exchanged research ideas and planned for future collaboration, including publishing joint papers, applying for research funding and international patents. Participants were unanimously in favor of regular academic exchanges and sharing research results, which will contribute to long-term cooperation.

Soon after the research collaboration MOU was signed in January this year (news link) , a group of JI professors and colleagues from SJTU’s Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Information and Electrical engineering visited KITECH’s Seoul Division in April to prepare for joint projects. In August, with the strong support of KITECH’s director, a research project on light trapping method using nanostructured solar cell secured funding successfully. Professor Kwan Hyun Cho from KITECH is the principal investigator and JI’s Professor Yang Tian is a major participant. This symposium provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange results and further strengthened the ties, which is significant for the long-term collaboration between SJTU and KITEC.

Introduction of KITECH:

Korea Institute of Industrial Technology is Korea’s only research institution dedicated to providing practical technology support for SMEs, including industrial manufacturing techniques, production-site technology, local characteristics and national strategies. It focuses on the development of energy-efficient production systems, basic production technology and combining technology with services. Since its founding 20 years ago, the research institute has completed 4800 industrial R&D projects, with more than 70% transfer rate.
