In the past few years, due to potential applications in personal medical and telemedicine, compact microscopy has become a research hotspot. This imaging technology is thought to cut costs associated with telemedicine, eliminate the need for professional and technical personnel to analyze imaging and provide fast, inexpensive medical diagnostics in resource-constrained areas. The core of this technology is to remove the lens. In the compact micro-imaging technology, digital coaxial holography can achieve lensless imaging and reconstruction of the sample image by recording a single holographic image.

At a recent mini-workshop, Professor Jigang Wu introduced the research work of his experimental team on compact microscopy, including a lensless coaxial holographic microscope using Taber illumination and iterative reconstruction algorithm and two methods to improve the resolution of the image, i.e., pixel super resolution method and interpolation method. Numerical simulations and experimental results show that submicron resolution microscopy can be achieved with this compact lensless microscopy system.
