讲座摘要

To meet the demand of future technologies, such as artificial photosynthesis, internet of things (IoT), and high-speed wireless communication, materials with controllable physical properties and compatible fabrication methods for low-cost, large-area and flexible device applications are required. Colloidal nanocrystals (NCs), consists of nanocrystalline cores surrounded by shells of ligands, stand out as one promising platform. Chemically synthesized NC dispersions can assemble into thin films through solution-based deposition techniques to construct various device stacks. The material property of single or ensembles of NCs is highly tunable by modifying the NC core and/or ligand shell during or post synthesis. The goal of my research is to integrate colloidal NCs into functional devices and specifically enhance the efficiency, stability, and scalable manufacturing of these nanodevices to enable them for realworld applications. In this talk, I will summarize my previous works about developing non-toxic NC materials and efficient device architectures for near infrared optoelectronic devices, stabilizing narrow bandgap semiconductors for photocatalytic water splitting, and my current research regarding the exploration of scale-up fabrication of NC devices. Finally, I will conclude with an outlook of my future research, including developing advanced 3D manufacturing of colloidal nanomaterials to construct multi-scale and multi-functional nanodevices for solar energy harvesting and terahertz sensing and communication.

主讲人简介

Dr. Tianshuo Zhao obtained his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University in 2011. Under the supervision of Prof. Cherie Kagan, he finished his PhD thesis dissertation in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2019, he joined Prof. Shu Hu’s lab in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University as a postdoctoral associate. Early 2021, Dr. Zhao returned to UPenn and continued his postdoctoral training in the engineering research center (ERC) for internet of things for precision agriculture (IoT4Ag). Through these interdisciplinary research experiences, he has gained expertise in nanomaterial chemical synthesis, surface chemistry, photo(electro)chemistry, solid-state device physics, modelling and fabrication.

Dr. Zhao’s research is centered around advancing nanomaterial-based devices towards real world applications in energy harvesting, sensing and communication, with comprehensive efforts spent in improving the device efficiency, stability, and fabrication scalability. He has published 17 research papers in high-impact journals, including PNAS, JACS, ACS Nano, Joule, Science, and Nano Letters, co-authored one book chapter and two US patents. He serves as the reviewer panel member for Current Nanoscience and has peer-reviewed 20+ papers for Journals including ACS Nano, Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, Nano Research, and Nanotechnology.
