讲座摘要

Mesoscale ocean eddies are ubiquitous coherent rotating structures of water with radial scales on the order of 10~100 kilometers. They play an important role in the transport and mixing of physical and biogeochemical properties that are crucial to the ocean circulation and ecosystem. Ocean eddies can also affect the air-sea interactions and therefore influence the weather and climate. This seminar presents Dr. Kang’s research on understanding the dynamics and variability of ocean eddies using both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. In particular, the automatic eddy detection-tracking method and the eddy energetics analysis framework that she developed will be introduced. The applications of these approaches in examining eddies’ impact on climate and ecosystems will be discussed.

主讲人简介

Dujuan Kang is an Associate Professor in the School of Oceanography at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She received her PhD in Environmental Fluid Mechanics from Stanford University. She also has a B.S. degree in Atmospheric Sciences from Peking University and an M.S. degree in Atmospheric Sciences from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Before joining SJTU, she worked as an Assistant Research Professor at Rutgers University. Dr. Kang uses both theoretical and numerical methods to study multi-scale ocean dynamics and their interactions with the atmosphere and ecosystem. Her research aims to improve the understanding and prediction of regional-to-global climate and environmental change.
