The mission of the Joint Institute Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT-JI) is to promote and ensure teaching excellence in the Joint Institute (JI).

CLT Committee

Since its establishment in August, 2019, CLT Committee has held dozens of activities, including training for new faculty, training for online and offline teaching, teaching seminars, and luncheon parties, etc.

Center for Learning and Teaching Mailbox (ji-clt@sjtu.edu.cn)

The Center for Learning and Teaching Mailbox receives emails from TAs whenever the TAs have problems regarding their job. If the TA prefers to do the consultation online rather than face-to-face communication, the mailbox provides them with opportunities and access to getting help and consultation from experienced TA Mentors.

CLT Forum – Class Interaction

The topic for October forum meeting is Class Interaction.

Speakers:

Dr. Mary-Ann Mycek, Associate Dean for Graduate and Professional Education        

Mary-Ann Mycek, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering & the Medical School, a Faculty Member in the Applied Physics Graduate Program, and a Core Member of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Diann Brei, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chair Department of Integrative System and Design.

Diann Brei is the Chair of Integrative Systems + Design. Brei is also a Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education of Mechanical Engineering. She received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and her B.S.E. in Computer Systems Engineering from Arizona State University. Her research interests include design, smart materials and structures, sensor and actuator design, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), structural dynamics, vibration and noise control, microfabrication techniques for electroactive materials, and optimization of transducers and smart structures. Before serving as Chair of ISD, Diann was the Program Director for ISD’s Design Science Doctoral Program.

The topic for November forum meeting is Interactive classroom.

Speakers:

Prof. Abdelmadjid Mesli, Director of research, CNRS, France

Prof. Mesli is a well established researcher and experienced educator from CNRS, France. He is now an adjunct professor at JI and has been teaching at JI in the past 3 years. He is passionate in teaching and very serious about assuring quality of the courses.

In today’s presentation, Mesli will talk about how to promote interaction. Interaction is necessary for teaching, since it can help teacher get the feedback and adjust their teaching. Mesli will talk about the difference between the French higher education system and the US system, and compare the middle-east students with students in JI. Based on the fact that JI students are not active in class and after class, he will share his experience in changing students form passive to active. In this session, you can discuss freely on how to promote interaction both in class and after.

The topic for November forum meeting is free discussion and challenges.

Workshop:

This City Learning & Teaching Forum will focus on the topic of teaching experience. This workshop is a free discussion without setting structure.

Beginning with introduction of the attendees, each one will share his/her teaching challenges, experiences, thoughts, hopes, etc. Specially, they will share their opinion on the relationship between grades and engagement of class based on the experience.

We hope that this Forum will explore how we can improve the quantity of student participation in classes and find out why students focus so much on grades.

 

CLT Forum – Lecture Hour Adjustment

The topic for December forum meeting is lecture hour adjustment.

Workshop:

CLT, Center for Learning and Teaching, would like to hold a workshop for adjustment in lecture time.

In this workshop, we want to talk about the proposal to adjust lecture hours at JI.

The purposes of adjusting the lecture hour include promoting the interaction between students and teacher, reducing the workload of students and better aligning with the UM course organization.

CLT Forum – Assessment Management

Center for Learning and Teaching Forum – Tuesday 10th December 403 – Long Bin Building

The topic for December forum meeting is assessment management.

Speakers:

Prof. CP Chen, Asso. Dean/Professor with tenure

Prof. CP is Tang Junyuan Chair Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs since 2017. He is an experienced educator in Mechanical Engineering.

In the workshop, CP Chen will give a speech about the topic of assessment method in teaching. In the speech, CP mainly focuses on the change in Student Outcomes from ABET point of view. In addition, CP emphasizes that every student should have their own solution and they should have the ability to communicate with a range of audiences.

Prof. Yaping Dan, Associate professor

Prof. Yaping is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering. He has been a teacher in JI since 2012. Yaping is good at quizzes in class and he will share his experience in the workshop. From the view of Yaping, the purpose of quiz in class is not to test students, but to prompt open discussion. Also, attendees will discuss their different methods to promote discussion in class.

 

CLT Forum – Summer Course Training

The topic for April forum meeting is summer course training.

Workshop:

The workshop will cover the following topic:

– Functions in Zoom and Canvas supporting online teaching, by Allan ZHU, IT Manager.

– Online exams, Piazza, polling function in Zoom, comparison between live and pre-recorded lectures, by Horst

– Student engagement and classroom interaction, functions of the Zoom chat, TA’s role, by Yongxing

– Lessons/mistakes in making short videos, by Qiang

– Group discussions in break out rooms, interactive classes, recordings to make short presentations, by Sam

– Other tips and techniques, by all faculty

 

CLT Forum – New Faculty Orientation on Teaching

Center for Learning and Teaching Forum – Friday 29th May online.

The topic for May forum meeting is new faculty orientation on teaching.

Workshop:

CLT, Center for Learning and Teaching, would like to hold a workshop for the 2020 JI new faculty on teaching. This workshop is specifically for our new JI faculty.

At the beginning of the workshop, Qiang Zhang will give a brief introduction. Then, Yongxing Shen will give a talk about the topic of surviving your first semester at the JI, and beyond. Also, Pin Chen will introduce TT review, tenure and promotion procedure. And Gang Zheng will talk to all the JI new faculty. At last, we leave a Q&A session. You can ask any question you want to know.

 

CLT Forum – Class Interaction

Center for Learning and Teaching Forum – Friday 17th July 403 – Long Bin Building.

The topic for July forum meeting is class interaction.

Speakers:

Prof. Zhang Jun.

Prof. Zhang will give a speech on the topic of design of Interaction in online class. During the workshop, Prof. Zhang will first introduce the effect of interaction on class. Teachers can get feedback of the class and balance the difference of students by interaction. Also, the strategy of interaction is mentioned by Prof. Zhang. At the last of Zhang’s speech, he will talk about the key point of interaction online, including monitor, feedback and engagement.

In this workshop, we leave some time for Q&A, you can ask any question you want to know.

 

CLT Forum – ME Group Projects

The topic for November forum meeting is ME Group Projects.

Workshop

CLT would like to call a meeting to discuss the assessment strategy for all group projects in ME curriculum. In JI, ME students have heavy group assignments almost every term. From time to time, we receive students’ complaints about the grading policy and workload. Recently a few ME faculty members also raised some points to improve the quality of our overall curriculum.

In this meeting let’s share our thoughts on the following items:

Fair grading policy to assess individual contribution in group projects

Balancing the overall weight of group assignments in ME

The topic for April forum meeting is the design of teaching plans.

Workshop

This is the 2nd session in a series designed by SJTU CLTD to provide basic training for college teaching. This workshop will continue on the topic of the design of teaching plans. In particular, we will focus on the topic of target setting. First, the speaker will introduce the process of making an instructional plan. Following we will do some exercise on target setting and analyze the feedback of the exercise. And you can discuss freely after finishing a series of exercises.
