Elastic metamaterials (EMMs), a class of engineered microstructural systems with bizarre features beyond natural materials, have demonstrated their versatile applicabilities for vibration and elastic wave manipulation. However, the conventional passive EMM designs invariably encounter the difficulty for covering a wide and controllable spectrum due to their unadjustable characteristics. Active EMMs outperform the conventional ones due to their preferable tunable features by incorporating smart materials and active control approaches. This dissertation will focus on the mechanism underlying the active tunability of EMMs and investigates the design scheme of the tunable microstructures to achieve the adaptive vibration and elastic wave control performance.


Yihao Song received a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Dalian University of Technology in 2018. He is currently a PhD candidate at University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute, supervised by Prof. Yanfeng Shen. His research interest includes active elastic metamaterials, guided waves, wave and vibration control.
