The Liberal Arts Division at the University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (JI) seeks to fill a non-tenure-track long-term teaching faculty position in humanities and social sciences. The UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI) was founded in 2006, following a strategic partnership between the University of Michigan (UM) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Both partner universities are committed to developing JI into a world-class institute for engineering education. The Chinese government recognizes JI as an exemplar of Sino-American collaboration in higher education. In 2014, JI also received the prestigious Andrew Heiskell Award for “Innovation in International Education” from the Institute of International Education (IIE). JI currently offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), and Materials Science & Engineering (MSE), all in keeping with UM curriculum objectives. All course instruction is in English. The Liberal Arts Division at the JI offers a variety of courses in humanities and social sciences, providing foundational knowledge in human history, society, and culture. Our educational goals are to expose students to the world beyond their specialized area of study, nurturing future leaders with global visions. We are looking for colleagues with a passion for liberal arts education and cross-disciplinary interests to join us. Candidates who work in the following fields are particularly welcomed to apply: anthropology, art history, history of science, economics, film study, or sociology. A PhD degree in hand is required. JI operates on a three-semester schedule, and the successful candidate is expected to teach six courses a year, two courses per semester. We are looking for a scholar-teacher in philosophy or related discipline, who can teach the required course in professional ethics as well as elective courses in his/her field of expertise. Our professional ethics course introduces students to engineering and technology ethics, with a cross-cultural and international focus. Its ultimate goals are to increase students’ ethical awareness and their understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities in global contexts and to identify and navigate ethical issues involving technology. JI operates on a three-semester schedule. The successful candidate is expected to teach 6 courses a year, 3-4 credits each course. Responsibilities

The Academic Writing and Humanities departments at UM-SJTU JI, located in Shanghai, China invites applications for full-time positions in Academic Writing and Intellectual Breadth. The positions offer an exciting opportunity to teach some of the highest-achieving students in China while living in Shanghai, a world-class, cosmopolitan metropolis. The successful candidates will contribute directly to the continuing development of a young program in collaboration with an energetic and diverse community of faculty members. The UM-SJTU JI is an English-based higher education institute founded in 2006, in collaboration between the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This partnership commits fully to developing JI as a world-class institute for engineering education. In 2014, JI was the first Chinese institution to win the prestigious Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education—one of the highest honors in international higher education. In a short time, JI has become an exemplary model of Sino-American educational collaboration. First-Year Academic Writing (AW) courses are sequenced over the Fall and Spring trimesters and aim to teach students the principles, conventions, and styles of Academic Writing. Essay assignments focus on critical thinking skills, the multi-draft writing process, and academic research across a variety of genres and disciplines. The LAD values diversity and innovation, and individual lecturers are encouraged to develop their own courses based on subjects and texts within their own fields of research. Intellectual Breadth (IB) courses encompass a variety of non-engineering disciplines including Philosophy, Social Sciences, Literature, History, and Creative Writing. This coursework is equivalent to what is often called “general education” and it serves a critical function in broadening the intellectual horizons of our high-achieving students. JI operates on a trimester schedule, and successful candidates are expected to teach six courses a year. The anticipated teaching ratio for this position is 4 AW and 2 IB courses, two courses per trimester, scheduled approximately as follows: A 13-week Fall trimester, mid-September to early December A 10-week, accelerated Spring trimester, late-February to late-April A 14-week Summer trimester, mid-May to early August Due to the irregularity of Chinese and American holidays, JI’s Winter vacation lasts from early December to late-February, and summer vacation lasts from early August to mid-September. Please note that SJTU’s hiring process is a rather long timeline and candidates should set their expectations and plan accordingly. Responsibilities
  • Teach First-Year Academic Writing courses
  • Teach Intellectual Breadth courses according to faculty qualifications and interest and according to institutional needs
  • Prepare and conduct lectures, design homework, and supervise examinations

Qualifications:

  • Interest or experience in China and/or in working with Chinese students

The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (JI) cordially invites scholars with rich teaching experience and well-established research in all emerging fields related to Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering to spend the summer of 2019 (May 13 – August 9) at JI. This is an opportunity for the participating scholars to learn about the JI, explore research collaborations with JI faculty, recruit top quality Chinese students for graduate study, and experience Shanghai, one of the most dynamic, internationalized, and safest cosmopolitan cities in the world. A visiting faculty member is expected to teach at least one course. While the preferred length of the course is 13 weeks (the entire summer), 8-week arrangement may be an option. The compensation is competitive. Transportation is covered. Lodging with paid utility in the downtown area of Shanghai is also provided. Requirements:
