讲座摘要

The energy demand over the world never stops increasing, but we are still largely relying on fossil fuel-based energy generation systems. This has caused an increase of sea surface temperature and consequently climate changes that we are confronting now. To mitigate these imminent global issues, tremendous efforts have been made to develop clean and sustainable energy generation methods and to save and use energy efficiently. Against such backdrops, quantum dots (QDs) have been brought to the forefront of new high-performance energy and optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their fascinating physicochemical properties, such as size-tunable emission wavelengths, high color purity, high quantum yield, and low fabrication cost.

In this seminar, Dr. Yuljae Cho will talk about his recent research in QDs, namely, nanoscale particles of semiconducting materials, and their applications to energy devices— specifically, solar cells and LEDs for energy generation and saving technology. The talk will also cover (1) general theories of solar cells and LEDs, (2) basic concepts of QDs, and (3) merits of using QDs in solar cells and LEDs.

主讲人简介

Dr. Yuljae Cho has been working in optoelectronics and energy conversion technology based on nanoscale semiconducting materials for over 10 years. He is currently an assistant professor at UM-SJTU JI, SJTU. Dr. Cho received his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford in 2018 and had postdoctoral research experiences at the University of Oxford (2018-2019) and the University of Cambridge (2019-2020) prior to joining JI.
