Abstract

Over the past few decades, remarkable strides have been taken in technology innovation and advancement in automotive internal combustion (IC) engines. While electrified powertrain technologies including hybrid, battery electrical propulsion and fuel cells are increasingly penetrating the markets, IC engines will continue to take the major share in transportations. Powertrain hybridization provides a great opportunity for IC engines. Conventional engines will be transformed with features like high thermal efficiency (fuel economy), near-zero emissions, and design simplicity. The role of an IC engine will be changed from “Solo” (single power-source) to “Duo” (working together with a traction motor) in light-duty vehicles. This seminar will discuss the recent progress and outlook of automotive engines.
