Abstract

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI), including photoacoustic microscopy and tomography, is an emerging modality that shows great potential for clinical research from organelles to Organs. Photoacoustic microscopy is renowned for the high-contrast in vivo vascular imaging in deep tissues in the visible optical region. Recently, photoacoustic microscopy has been successfully extended to the ultraviolet region for cell nuclei imaging and the near-infrared region of lipids imaging. Now we further explored PAI in the mid-infrared region that contains rich molecular vibrational information. Our method addresses the low-contrast and low-resolution issues existed in conventional infrared microscopy. This technique can help boost the development of label-free histology. Second, the strength of photoacoustic tomography has been demonstrated in high-resolution imaging of small animal and human organs with centimeters depth. We recently developed a human-breast photoacoustic tomography system that can image a whole breast at high resolution within a single breath hold, which will help the non-invasive breast cancer screening. Finally, the prospects of photoacoustic brain imaging will be highlighted.

Biography

Dr. Shi received his BSc in chemical physics from the University of Science and Technology of China. Then, he continued to study chemistry and received his PhD at Princeton University. His PhD work involves theoretical chemical dynamics and experimental nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. After his PhD, He got postdoc training in Prof. Lihong Wang’s lab and worked on photoacoustic imaging in the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Washington University in St. Louis, and then in the Department of Medical Engineering of Caltech. He joined Zhejiang Lab as a senior principal investigator in 2020. His current research interests include novel biomedical optical imaging, photoacoustic microscopy/tomography, ultrasonic imaging, and medical instrument development.
