Shanghai Jiao Tong University Global College (SJTUGC, abbreviated as GC) has signed a Global Degree Pathways (GDP) program agreement with the University of Waterloo (UW) in a ceremony held on October 27 at Long Bin Building.

In his welcome speech, SJTU Vice President Zhaoguo Zhang said GC has long been committed to providing world-class international engineering education and expanding global academic partnerships since its founding in 2006. The newly signed agreement marks a milestone in this effort, combining SJTU’s academic strength with Waterloo’s innovative learning environment to offer a world-class educational experience for students.

The GDP agreement marks GC’s first GDP partnership with a Canadian university. Under the program, students will complete their fourth year at the UW through an exchange arrangement without paying additional tuition fees. They may enroll in courses and research projects across Waterloo’s engineering and business schools and later pursue master’s studies in fields such as Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Design Engineering, and Management Science and Engineering. Graduates will earn a bachelor’s degree from SJTU and a master’s degree from UW. The program is expected to open for applications in Fall 2025.

Launched in 2015, the GDP programs connect GC with leading universities around the world, offering flexible and interdisciplinary pathways for combined undergraduate and graduate studies. GC’s current GDP partners include the University of Michigan, University of Southern California, North Carolina State University, University of California Irvine, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, RWTH Aachen University, Trinity College Dublin, University of Auckland, Nanyang Technological University, and National University of Singapore.

Located in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, UW is a globally recognized research university known for innovation, entrepreneurship, and the world’s largest cooperative education (Co-op) program. Its engineering, computer science, and education disciplines rank among the world’s best. The university’s computer science program has been ranked No. 1 in Canada for four consecutive years and among the global top 25.
