Active materials and smart structures are shaping the future of engineering designs. This seminar will cover the fundamental concepts of novel engineering materials and their applications for establishing the intelligent structural systems. Three various kinds of active materials will be presented: the piezoelectric material, the shape memory alloy, and the liquid metal. This talk will address their special features, functional capabilities, and novel advancements with recent progress in both academic research and engineering practice.

Dr. Yanfeng Shen is currently a tenure-track Associate Professor at the University of Michigan–Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of South Carolina in 2014. Thereafter, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. Dr. Shen started his academic career at the Joint Institute in 2016. His research covers: Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE), actuators and sensors, as well as mechanical waves and vibrations. He has published more than 20 journal articles and over 40 conference papers in recent years. He is serving as a syndic for Equipment Structure Health Monitoring and Prognostics of China (CSHMP). He is also an executive member of the Nondestructive Diagnostics and Prognostics Division (NDPD) of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). For his outstanding academic achievements in the field of SHM, he was awarded the Achenbach Medal in 2020.
