With the ever-increasing complexity and scale of modern engineering design, the fundamental incompatibility between computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) has become the de-facto bottleneck for the current engineering design. Isogeometric analysis (IGA), via directly utilizing high-fidelity CAD models in CAE, has emerged as the most influential solution to bridge the gap between the two sides. However, due to the limitations of the current industrial standard for CAD, IGA faces significant obstacles in dealing with complex geometries in real-world applications. The seamless integration of CAD and CAE for complex geometries can be approached through two complementary perspectives: making CAD be analysis-suitable, or making CAE be design-aware. The former changes CAD while retaining CAE, which strives to develop analysis-suitable spline technologies. The latter retains CAD but changes CAE, the key of which is to establish novel boundary-unfitted methods. In this talk, I will introduce their respective challenges, solution strategies, and latest developments. Moreover, I will explore their advantages and prospects through various applications such as neuronal material transport, automobile engineering, the advection-diffusion problem, and the Stokes problem.


Xiaodong Wei is currently an Assistant Professor at JI, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, M.S. at The University of Tokyo, and B.S. at Tsinghua University. Prior to joining JI, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Mathematics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Xiaodong's research focuses on isogeometric analysis, computational mechanics, computational geometry, and topology optimization. He has published over 20 articles in international journals such as CMAME and SIAM. He is a member of USACM and IACM and has been organizing many symposia in these societies. He was a recipient of Shanghai Leading Talent Program (Overseas), Bertucci Fellowship, and Liang Ji-Dian Fellowship.
