Abstract

Fast-charging and high-energy-density batteries pose significant safety concerns due to high rates of heat generation and dendrite induced short circuit. Understanding how localized high temperatures affect the battery is critical but remains challenging. Important insights on the effects of heterogeneous temperatures within batteries and aids the development of safer batteries, thermal management schemes, and diagnostic tools. In addition, to achieve energy density comparable to liquid electrolyte-based cells and better safety, ultrathin and lightweight solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity are desired. Potential approaches to design solid electrolytes with comparable thicknesses to commercial polymer electrolyte separators used in liquid electrolytes will be discussed.

Biography

Dr. Jin Xie is currently an assistant professor in the school of physical science and technology at ShanghaiTech University. He obtained his B.S. in chemistry from Fudan University in 2009 and Ph.D. in chemistry from Boston College in 2015. From 2015-2018, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the department of materials science and engineering at Stanford University. His scientific interests have been focused on the development and understanding of materials for advanced energy storage systems. He has published 50 scientific papers, with more than 4700 citations and h-index of 32.
