Abstract

Traditionally-built piers/walls cannot tolerate seismic loadings mainly due to their deficient design/construction. Although several strategies have been proposed for rehabilitating standing structures, they involve excessive repair costs, laborious procedures, and long downtime. The recent use of self-centering walls (SWs) led to a significant decrease in the extent and severity of damage during seismic events. Although still in its infancy, SWs’ superior performance suggests self-centralization might be a feasible rehabilitation technique. In this study, the performance of SWs is initially studied under the effect of SWs' behavior determinative, and subsequently, the feasibility of piers' rehabilitation using self-centralization strategy is investigated.
