Abstract

Magnesium (Mg) alloys are utilized in various industries including aerospace, transportation and biomedicine due to their lightweight characteristics. However, the limited corrosion resistance constrains their adoption on a grand industrial scale. Current studies on corrosion-resistant Mg alloys are primarily limited to experiments, with a lack of understanding of corrosion mechanisms at the atomic scale. This study aims to explore the effect of intermetallic phases on the Mg cathodic corrosion behavior and clarify the reasons behind the varying impacts by first-principles calculations machine learning technologies, which is expected to accelerate the design of corrosion-resistant Mg alloys.
