JI students of the Vm395 * laboratory course presented their final projects in the JI lab on December 14, 2011. The theme of the presentation is “Seeing is Not Always Believing”.
Students in this course were divided into eight groups to complete an experiment in two weeks.  The eight experiment topics are as follows:
1.      “Environment Effects on the Solar Panel”
2.      “Evaluation of Assumptions in Wind Tunnel’
3.      “Aliasing in Daily Life”
4.      “Effects of Emissivity on IR Thermography Calibration’
5.      “Dynamic Response of Thermocouples”
6.      “Infrared Camera Temperature Measurement at Different Tilt Angles”
7.      “Noise Problem for a Pressure Transducer”
8.      “Response Time of Pressure Measurement and its importance”
Based on experimental techniques and presentation performance, Team 1 and Team 5 won the first prizes.
One instructor of Vm395, Prof. Qiang Zhang remarked that the “Seeing is Not Always Believing” experiments aim to teach the students not to easily believe what they have seen during experiment and research. The students have to find out the facts through collecting data, analyzing data, and correcting errors. A student of Team 4A Snowball commented, “The other instructor of the course, Dr. Kwee-Yan Teh, is very strict in his requirements for our experiment reports. If you follow his instructions, you will produce standard Chinese and English reports. Having been trained by Vm395, now I feel very comfortable writing lab reports.”

*ME Vm395. Laboratory I (4 credits)

Lectures and experiments designed to introduce the student to the basics of experimentation, instrumentation, data collection and analysis, error analysis, and reporting. Topics may include fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanics, materials, and dynamical systems. Emphasis is placed on report writing and team-building skills.
