The Shanghai Municipal Government has been promoting international cooperation in education between the universities in Shanghai and various foreign universities. The Shanghai Municipal Education Committee has been supervising the collaboration projects and evaluating their progress since July, 2004. In February 2012, the committee announced the list of eight model collaboration projects. The UM-SJTU Joint Institute is on top of the list for its successful collaboration with University of Michigan.
According to the Shanghai Municipal Education Committee, 39 collaboration projects have been evaluated, among which 32 meet the standards of international cooperation and eight were selected as models for the projects. Besides JI, other models include:

·  Tonji University’s Chinesisch-Deutsche Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften der Tongji-Universtät.
·  Fudan University’s MBA Program with Norwegian School of Management.
·  Donghua University’s Art Design Program with Educational Foundation Bunka Gakuen, Japan.
·  Shanghai Institute of Technology’s Electrical Engineering and Automation Program with Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.
·  Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine‘s Pharmacy Program with London Metropolitan University.
·  Shanghai Institute of Medicine’s Transport and Distribution of Medicine Program with Box Hill Institute of TAFE, Australia.
