Zhang Jie, president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has been selected to be a foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS), according to an announcement made by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on May 2, 2012.
President Zhang, a prominent physicist and a CAS academic, has made significant contributions to research on high-energy physics, laser fusion, and X-ray laser technology. He is also a member of the German Academy of Sciences, the Third World Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom.
President Zhang was one of the 21 foreign associates who were selected by the NAS on the academy’s 149th annual meeting this year. The NAS membership is one of the highest honors given to U.S. scientists and engineers.
