The result of the 2012 SJTU “Students Innovation Contest” was announced on April 25, 2012.  This year 102 projects participated by 333 students were accepted in three categories: (1) SJTU level; (2) Shanghai municipal level; (3) national level.  Thirty projects (29.4%) and 101 students (32.6%) were ranked as “Excellent,” among which are JI’s two projects and eight senior students.
The project “Portable water-extracting device based on bionic technology and solar energy” is submitted by the team supervised by Prof. Li Mian,  consisting of Ding Shengda, Zhao Chuming, Hou Xueying,  Jia Meng, and Zhou Wenhao. This is the only project at the national level. Team leader Ding Shengda commented, “Our invention is a device that extracts and collects water from the air using the cooling technique of the semi-conductors and hydrophilic- hydrophobic metal plates. Our inspiration came from the 2010 drought in Yunnan, at which point we were struck by the idea of producing water from the air to solve the water problem, so we started experimenting. “
The project “Remote-controlled mobile patrol cars using campus WIFI” is the effort of the team supervised by Prof. Zhu Xinen, consisting of Liu Guanshuo, Xin Hao, and Chen Ming. Team Leader Liu Guanshuo remarked, “I have learned a lot from the contest experience.” He also encouraged more students to take part in the innovation projects.
