Prof. Xinwan Li has been nominated as the Associate Dean for Research at the Joint Institute, effective May 20, 2013.

Prof. Li obtained his bachelor degree in physics from Suzhou University in 1990, master degree in radio electromagnetic field and microwave technology from Shanghai Technology University (current Shanghai University) in 1993, and Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from SJTU in 2005. He was a visiting scholar at Essex University in 1997 and had collaborated with Opcom, an American company in the Silicon Valley in 2001. He has been teaching at SJTU’s State Key Laboratory of Optical Fiber Communication since 1993 and teaching in SJTU’s Department of Electronic Engineering since 2005. He was a visiting professor at Chonbuk National University, South Korea, in 2007. From 2011 to 2012, Prof. Li served as the Dean of the School of Electrical and Information Physics at Ningxia University.

In research, Prof. Li has led 2 National 863 projects, 2 National Science Foundation projects, and 30 projects funded by public and private sectors. As a principal investigator, he has been funded almost 10 million RMB and has published more than 100 papers. As the principal inventor, he obtained the first patent for SJTU in the United States. Prof. Li has won many awards, including National University Science and Technology Progress Award in 2001,Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award in 2004, Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents Award in 2005, Shanghai Shuguang Scholar in 2006, Shanghai Jiao Tong University President Award in 2012.
At the announcement meeting on May 20, SJTU Vice President Zhongqin Lin pointed out the significance of Prof. Li’s new role. Lin remarked that with his excellent performance as a dean at Ningxia University, Prof. Li’s experience will be invaluable in helping developing JI as the testing ground for China’s higher education reform. Lin believed that Prof. Li will soon adjust to the diverse environment at JI and work closely with Dean Jun Ni to continue building JI. Dean Ni welcomed Prof. Li and hoped he will make a big impact on strengthening JI’s research efforts as well as contribute to JI’s overall development.
