A delegation led by Professor Alec Gallimore, the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering at the University of Michigan (UM), arrived at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) on the morning of May 27 for his first visit to the UM-SJTU Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) since assuming his new tenure last year. The delegates were warmly received by the JI community.

Accompanied by Dean Peisen Huang and Xinwan Li, Associate Dean for Research, the delegates first toured the new JI building under construction. Then they received a briefing about JI faculty’s research by Chien-Pin Chen, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and visited two of JI’s laboratories where a couple of faculty members gave detailed descriptions of their respective fields of research. Dean Gallimore recognized their achievements in innovative research and expected further exchanges and cooperation between JI and UM.

The delegation then held talks with JI leaders, speaking highly of the achievements of the cooperation over the past decade or so. Both parties explored the future prospects of more cooperation, including the continuous opportunity for JI faculty to train at UM College of Engineering and deeper and broader collaboration between the faculties of both schools, as well as joint laboratories and research centers.

In the afternoon information seminar for the new dual-degree students, Jack Hu, UM’s Vice President of Scientific Research, welcomed the students and congratulated on their advantages in future career development with their cross-cultural capabilities trained by two top universities in the United States and China. Dean Gallimore briefed on the vision and mission of UM College of Engineering, ensuring the students that the College of Engineering is committed to fostering students’ ability of self-exploration and providing a high-quality diverse university experience and rich extracurricular learning opportunities.

During his visit to JI, Dean Alec Gallimore was greeted by Lin Zhongqin, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee. The two exchanged ideas about international collaboration on scientific research and agreed to strengthen the ties in the future. President Lin also met with Jack Hu and James Holloway, Vice Provost for Global Engagement and Interdisciplinary Academic Affairs, thanking them for their long-standing efforts to promote cooperation between the two schools.
