Mian Li, associate professor of mechanical engineering (tenured) at the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI), has recently been appointed as Associate Editor of the “Journal of Mechanical Design,” a professional journal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), for three years. He shares the responsibility of overseeing the review of papers submitted to the journal in the area of mechanical design automation.

Previously, Professor Li served as a reviewer for “Mechanical Design,” “Engineering Optimization,” “Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization,” and other academic journals in engineering automation and engineering optimization. He was also a guest editor for a special issue of “Mechanical Design.”

Founded in 1880, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is an international nonprofit organization of education and technology, with more than 125,000 members worldwide and is one of the world’s largest technology publishers. ASME’s publications provide information on interdisciplinary cutting-edge technology, and the “Mechanical Design,” launched in 1978, is a world-renowned authoritative journal in the field of mechanical design. The “Mechanical Design” serves ASME’s Design Engineering Branch and its Technical Committee, covering a wide spectrum of integrated design, including design automation, design theory and methods, and manufacturing and lifecycle design. The journal accepts original research results, mainly in the form of published academic papers but also technical briefs, innovative design papers, book reviews, and editorials. The journal’s articles are of high scientific value and are all included in SCI, with a 2016 impact factor of 2.57.

Brief Biography of Professor Mian Li

Mian LiProfessor Mian Li graduated with a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) in automation in July 1999 and a master’s degree in control theory and control engineering from Tsinghua University in July 2001. He received his doctoral degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Maryland with the honor of “Best Doctoral Thesis” in December 2007, where he continued to work as a postdoctoral fellow. In September 2009, he returned to China and joined the UM-SJTU Joint Institute as an assistant professor. In 2010, he was also appointed an associate professor at the Institute of Automotive Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In September 2016, he was promoted to a tenured associate professor of the Joint Institute, where he teaches advanced courses in design and manufacturing, engineering optimization, and engineering decision-making.

Professor Li has published 34 technical papers over the years in various SCI (Science) International Journals, including “Journal of Mechanical Design,” “Applied Energy,” “Networks and Spatial Economics,” “Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization,” and “Engineering Optimization.” Since joining the Joint Institute, he has been working on more than 20 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the Shanghai Science and Technology Program, and enterprises of science and technology. He won the Shanghai Municipal Teaching Achievement Award and SJTU Excellent Teacher Award in 2013, SJTU Teaching Achievement Award in 2015, and SJTU “Kaiyuan Top Ten” Teaching Award in 2016.
