On May 24, the Preparation Meeting and Symposium for the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University (UM-SJTU) Joint Research Center for Smart Connected Systems was held at UM-SJTU Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) Long Bin Building. Senior representatives from leading companies including CIMC, Freetech, Bosch, DFJ Dragon Fund China, GE Healthcare (China) Group, JMCG, Panasonic, and renowned scholars from the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University attended the meeting. The symposium was officiated by JI Professor Xudong Wang.

David Li, Lin Zhang, Louis Ji, Larry Li and Jeff Hsu were invited to participate in the preliminary round of industry panel discussions. The invited guests shared the key technical requirement in smart healthcare and smart manufacturing, and expressed their intentions of cooperation with the joint research center.

The subsequent academic talks were featured with invited UM speakers including Professor Mingyan Liu, Assistant Professor Jia Deng, and SJTU speakers including Assistant Professor Yafei Wang, Associate Professor Guoxing Wang, Associate Professor Yaping Dan, Professor Yanmin Zhu, Professor Jianbo Su, and Professor Robert Qiu. The speakers carried out in-depth discussions on three topics including Smart Devices and Embedded Systems, Networking for Smart Connected Systems, and Machine Learning, Data Mining, and Artificial Intelligence. The academic sessions also offered references and suggestions for the center on future positioning and development in the three directions of smart devices, smart connectivity, data mining and artificial intelligence.

SJTU Assistant Professor Yafei Wang presented the theme report on “The “Multi” Concepts in Automated Vehicle Systems”. He shared the research progress of the team in the field of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) and discussed the challenges and future development of CAV.

SJTU Associate Professor Guoxing Wang presented the theme report on “Wireless Sensor Networks for Medical Applications” and introduced the research achievement of the team in the field of smart sensor networks and the ongoing research in the field of low-power smart ICs. He also portrayed the prospect of smart sensing system.

SJTU Associate Professor Yaping Dan presented the theme report on “Integrated Multispectral Analyzers for Chemical Sensing” and introduced the research work of integrated multispectral analyzer that can realize smart sensing, as well as the advantages and prospects of the research.

UM Professor Mingyan Liu presented the theme report on “Improving the Privacy and Accuracy of ADMM-Based Distributed Algorithms for Networked Systems” and analyzed the data privacy issues that exists in distributed computing. She also introduced achievements of her research team.

SJTU Professor Yanmin Zhu presented the theme report on “Inferring Mobility of Dockless Shared Bikes in a New City”. He analyzed the deployment of shared bicycles in new cities and proposed using machine learning to predict the use of shared bicycles based on the data collected from cities with deployed shared bicycles.

SJTU Professor Jianbo Su presented the theme report on “Evaluation of Task Realization for Robot in Its Representation Space”. He introduced his research in the field of robot systems and demonstrated the team’s research achievements in the field of robotics.

With the support from JI Deans, JI faculty members, and JI graduate student volunteers, the symposium was a great success in promoting UM-SJTU collaborations across different research areas related to smart connected systems. JI, on behalf of SJTU, will continue to hold such joint symposium with UM on a regular basis.
