The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) held the 2023 Tang Junyuan Scholarship Award Ceremony on July 15 at Wuxi in Jiangsu Province, the hometown of the renowned entrepreneur Tang Junyuan, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of his son Tang Hsiang-Chien.

In his speech delivered at the ceremony, JI Dean Chien-Pin Chen conveyed deep respect and gratitude to the Tang family who provided sponsorship to the scholarship. The Tang family has demonstrated the valuable spirit of patriotism, pragmatism, emphasis on education, and innovation through their actions passed down from generation to generation, said the dean who hoped the scholarship recipients would live up to expectations, remain steadfast in their pursuits, forge ahead, and contribute to the progress of the society.

JI Student Councilor Yuwei Wu reported the evaluation process of the Tang Junyuan Scholarship in 2023. She said that after two rounds of comprehensive review lasting two months, the evaluation committee decided to offer the 2023 batch of the Scholarship to Ziming Zhou and Jingjia Peng, two JI sophomore students. Five students including Erdao Liang, Meng Sun, Xinhe Wang, Yufei Xi and Jovan Yap were given the nomination awards of the scholarship.

After the award ceremony, the JI delegation was led by the Shanghai Tang Junyuan Education Foundation Secretary-General Wei Zhang to visit the Tang Yuan, where the original Tang family granary was transformed into a historical exhibition, and the Tang family’s business and industry exhibition hall.
