South Korean girl leads “fabulous” campus life as JI student

Editor’s Note: Seungyeon Yang is a South Korean student at University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter), majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. She is president of the JI International Student Association and takes charge of the financial work at the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (IEEE-TEMS) Student Branch of the JI Center for Entrepreneurship. Seungyeon Yang considers herself an outgoing person; she likes to try new things, and is very interested in management and entrepreneurship.

JI student team claims CSTFM2022 best paper award

A team composed of three University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) undergraduate students has clinched the Best Student Paper award at the 2022 International Conference on Smart Transportation and Future Mobility (CSTFM 2022). Jiajun Gu, Qinhang Wu and Yicheng Hou won the award for their paper “Can yesterday’s mass transportation set the path for today’s sustainable transport? – A sustainability assessment of Shanghai No.71 Trolleybus”.

JI professor proposes new acoustic sensors for superior human-machine interaction

The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) Associate Professor Lei Shao and his collaborators have published a research article titled “A wave-confining metasphere beamforming acoustic sensor for superior human-machine voice interaction” in Science Advances,  a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary open-access scientific journal run by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The article proposes a new acoustic sensor for human-machine interaction (HMI) to distinguish and track multiple sound sources in a noisy background, with an outstanding signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a superior sensitivity at the same time.
