Q1: Am I eligible to apply to GC?

A1) I am an international student, please apply through Applying to GC.

A2)  I am Chinese and from Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan, please check  SJTU Undergraduate Admissions or GC Domestic Undergraduate Admissions.

A3) I am a non-Chinese citizen and a foreign passport holder, and my parent(s) is(are) Chinese citizen(s), please check http://www.moe.gov.cn/srcsite/A20/moe_850/202006/t20200609_464159.html

Q2: Is TOEFL or IELTS required for an international student?

A2: Yes, language proficiency test is required. But you can be exempted from taking any of these exams if your SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score is 650 or above, or if both your ACT Reading and English scores are 27 or above, and if you have recently completed at least four years of rigorous academic study in any of the following countries: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Federated States of Micronesia, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Montserrat, New Zealand, Seychelles, Shetland Islands, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), United States (other than Puerto Rico), US Virgin Islands, Singapore. (Those in American Schools and British Schools abroad may also be exempted if at least four years of rigorous academic study has recently been completed and scores meet above standards.)

Q3: Is SAT or ACT required?

A3: We highly recommend you to take SAT or ACT with essays. We may request you to submit your SAT or ACT scores later if your first submission does not provide sufficient information.  

If you apply with A-level scores, you need to apply with Math A or above. If you apply with International Baccalaureate (IB), you need to apply with Math HL 5 or above or SL 7 in Math or above. Predicted A-level or IB scores are NOT accepted. Students with valid college entrance exam scores, please contact the International Undergraduate Recruitment Office at gc-admissions@sjtu.edu.cn. (e.g., Malaysia UEC exam scores, Kazakhstan UNT scores. France National Exam scores, and etc….)

If you don’t have any exam scores mentioned above, you have an option to take the  SJTU International Undergraduate Entrance Exam in spring 2026 with other international students. Please contact isc.d@sjtu.edu.cn for more information.

Q4: When will I know the admission results?

A4: The application deadline for Fall Early Action is November 15, with decisions released on or before January 31. The application deadline for Fall Regular Decision is March 31, with decisions released on or before June 31.

Q5: When can I apply for the visa and do the physical check?

A5: When you receive your admission package with the JW202 form, you can apply for the visa. If you have any questions about your visa, please contact your local Chinese embassy, or SJTU Undergraduate Admission . We will do our best to address your visa questions, but it’s better for you to ask the experts.

Q6: Do I need to stay on campus in the resident hall or can I live off campus?

A6: For all international students you are not required to stay on campus. Here are housing options:

1) SJTU international resident hall

 you need to read the instructions for registration with the official admission letter.

2) Off – campus housing.

In order to secure off – campus housing, you need to do your residential certificate with the police station yourself, which is also required for your official J student visa.

Q7: When can freshmen start to select courses?

A7: During the orientation week, our Academic Office staff and academic program faculty will help you plan your course schedule.

Q8: Can I transfer my AP or IB credits?

A8: High school credits are not accepted at GC. 

Q9: How can I apply for International Programs or the Joint Undergraduate Master Program (JUMP)?

Q10: What will be tested in the math placement test?

A10:  You do not need to prepare for this test. Its purpose is for GC math teachers to know what you have learned in high school.

Q11: How can I apply for the GC international freshmen students’ scholarships?

A11: The GC international freshmen students’ scholarships will be announced in the fall semester. If you are fully registered at GC, you may apply for it. The amount of the scholarships will vary based on your previous high school performance and your interview results.

Q12: Can I do sports in the campus?

A12: Of course! You can choose from various sports and join teams from the class level to the university level.

Q13: I am Muslim. Where can I find food in the campus canteens?

A13: There are several campus canteens serving food for our Muslim students.
