Description:
This class discusses the origin of electrical, magnetic and optical properties of materials. The course starts with an overview of the importance of these materials properties in advancing many technologies and recent successful stories in improving the efficiency or performance of devices. Later this class continues with a detailed discussion about how and why materials respond to different electrical, magnetic and electromagnetic fields and probes and study of the conductivity, dielectric function, and magnetic permeability in metals, semiconductors, and insulators. At the meanwhile, the student will give a presentation on the recent success/challenge for a specific research area where knowledge from this class played/would play a role.
