ENGR6001J – Introduction to Graduate Technical Communication

Description:
This course is a Technical Communications course that aims to deepen students’ understanding of the grammatical, logical, and contextual elements of scientific and technical writing. This will occur through close reading and analysis of various scientific articles and technical communications textbooks, as well as through frequent writing exercises, designed to provide practical feedback. Particular attention will be paid to the development of a logical and sound scientific argument. Additionally, students will improve their ability to report technical data through charts and diagrams, and to analyze the significance of experimental results. This is the first in a series of three 1-credit classes comprising the graduate-level technical communications curriculum.

Problem-need-solution analysis for technical project development
Technical abstracts, their required sections and keywords for indexing
Creating a variety of charts and diagrams based on the variables to be shown
Integrating diagrams into your technical report, with appropriate signaling words
Literature reviews, to identify research gaps and provide justification for your project
Primary features and linguistic structures of technical language
Paraphrasing, direct quotation, and APA/IEEE citation formats
