ENGL3240J – Shakespeare Studies

Description:

The course will pursue the social, economic, and political issues of Shakespeare by reading one play drawn from each of his dramatic genres. We will attempt to situate Shakespeare in relation to the literary, theatrical, cultural, and political trends of his own time and comparing them to the present.

Course Topics:

  1. Reading and understanding several plays of William Shakespeare
  2. Understanding Shakespeare in context
  3. Relate Shakespeare back to contemporary times
  4. Understanding the difference between the page and the stage
  5. Demonstrating an understanding of basic literary conventions and discourse as related to Shakespeare
