Description:

ENGR1000J Introduction to Engineering introduces the principles of engineering and technical project design. The course is divided into two components: the technical side and the communications side. The technical side will focus on the history of engineering as a discipline, the formulation of new materials for sustainable energy and technology, and the design and conduct of laboratory experiments. The communication side will focus on the reporting of technical information in oral, written, and graphical formats.
There will be two team-based projects involved in this course. The students will design and build several energy conversion devices that can be implemented to generate clean energy on account of the global energy crisis. The first project will be proposed by the instructor and will give guidelines as to which criteria must be met by the solution developed by the students.
The second project will be proposed by the students themselves based on their own interest. The instructor will give an overarching topic, to which the students may propose their own project ideas. The proposal should be supported by a good rationale with a clear background of “problem, need, and solution”. The novelty of the design should be further illustrated by the students in their presentations and reports.

Course Topics:

1) Laboratory Safety
2) Project-based learning
3) Prototyping
3) Solving open-ended engineering problems
4) Technical communication skills
5) Overview of the engineering profession
